Terms of Service
Last updated: July 15, 2026
Drafted copy, not yet reviewed by counsel.
1. The service
Apace lets two or more people read a book together in sync — word by word, at a shared pace, so neither reader gets ahead of the other. Apace is operated by AAB Inventions LLC, a New Jersey limited liability company ("Apace," "we," "us"). These terms govern your use of the Apace app and of apace.ink. By creating an account or using Apace, you agree to these terms.
2. Eligibility & your account
You must be at least 13 years old, or the minimum age required in your country to use a service like Apace without parental consent, whichever is higher.
You're responsible for your account and for keeping access to it secure — that includes anything that happens through your sign-in method (email code or Sign in with Apple) and, on the device, your stored session. Tell us at [email protected] if you think your account has been compromised. The information you give us (like your display name) should be accurate and about you — accounts are for one person each, not shared or operated on behalf of a group.
3. Your content
Books you upload remain yours; Apace claims no ownership of them. By uploading a book, you represent and warrant that you own it or otherwise have the rights and permissions necessary to upload it and to read it with the people you invite. You grant Apace a limited, non-exclusive, worldwide, royalty-free license to store, process, and transmit your uploads solely as needed to operate the service — that is, to make the book readable by you and by the participants of the reading sessions you invite them to. Uploads are private: Apace does not make them publicly browsable, searchable, or discoverable, and the license ends when you delete the upload or your account.
4. Acceptable use
Do not upload or share content that infringes anyone else's copyright or other intellectual-property rights — only add books you own the necessary rights to or that are in the public domain.
We have zero tolerance for objectionable content and abusive behavior. In particular, you agree not to:
- Harass, threaten, abuse, or demean another user — in chat, in a reading session, or anywhere else in Apace;
- Post or share hateful, violent, or illegal content, or use Apace for any illegal purpose;
- Impersonate another person or misrepresent your affiliation with anyone;
- Probe, disrupt, or overload the service (including its servers or the accounts of other users);
- Attempt to circumvent usage limits — for example, the free reading-time allowance described below; or
- Scrape, crawl, or otherwise access Apace through automated means not authorized by us.
We may remove content and suspend or terminate accounts that violate this policy, with or without notice depending on severity. If someone is bothering you or you come across content that shouldn't be there, tell us at [email protected] and, where available, using the in-app reporting tools — we'll look into it.
5. Copyright & DMCA
Apace responds to notices of claimed copyright infringement under the Digital Millennium Copyright Act. If you believe material stored on Apace infringes your copyright, our Copyright & DMCA Policy explains how to file a takedown notice, how counter-notices and restoration work, and how to reach our designated agent.
6. Free allowance & subscriptions
Every Apace account includes a free allowance of shared reading time: 90 minutes of time actually spent reading together with another person, tracked once per account for the life of that account. Reading on your own doesn't count against it — the allowance is only spent while you're reading in sync with someone else. We may change how the free allowance works (for example its size or how it's tracked) with notice.
Apace doesn't currently offer any paid subscription or in-app purchase. If we do in the future, any paid plan will be billed through your Apple or Google account, will renew and can be cancelled according to that store's own rules, and its price will be shown to you before you buy. Apace never sees your payment card details — that's handled entirely by Apple or Google.
7. Termination
We will terminate, in appropriate circumstances, the accounts of users who repeatedly infringe others' copyrights (see the Copyright & DMCA Policy), and we may suspend or terminate accounts used to circumvent account-level limits — for example, deleting and re-creating an account, or operating multiple accounts, to reset the free reading-time allowance.
More generally: you may stop using Apace, or delete your account entirely, at any time from inside the app (You tab → Account → Delete account). We may suspend or terminate your account for violating these terms — with notice where practicable, and immediately for serious violations (like the ones above). When your account is terminated, your license to use Apace ends, and your data is handled the way our Privacy Policy describes for account deletion. Provisions that by their nature should survive termination — including the content-license wind-down above, disclaimers, limitations of liability, and governing law — continue to apply.
8. App Store terms
If you downloaded Apace through Apple's App Store, this section applies in addition to the rest of these terms:
- This agreement is between you and AAB Inventions LLC only, not Apple, and Apple is not responsible for Apace or its content.
- Your license to use the app is limited to a license to use it on an Apple-branded device that you own or control, as permitted by Apple's App Store Terms of Use.
- Apple has no obligation to provide any maintenance or support services for Apace.
- Apple is not responsible for addressing any claims relating to Apace or your use of it, including claims about product liability, Apace not meeting any legal or regulatory requirement, or consumer protection or similar laws.
- If a third party claims Apace infringes their intellectual property rights, Apple is not responsible for investigating, defending, settling, or discharging that claim — we are.
- Apple, and Apple's subsidiaries, are third-party beneficiaries of these terms, and once you accept them Apple has the right to enforce these terms against you as a third-party beneficiary.
- You represent that you're not located in a country subject to a U.S. government embargo or that has been designated by the U.S. government as a "terrorist supporting" country, and that you're not listed on any U.S. government list of prohibited or restricted parties.
- You must comply with any applicable third-party terms (for example your wireless carrier's agreement) when using the app.
9. Warranty & liability
Apace is provided "as is" and "as available." We work to keep it running well and to keep your data safe, but we don't promise the service will be uninterrupted, error-free, or perfectly secure, and we disclaim all other warranties, express or implied, to the fullest extent the law allows.
To the fullest extent permitted by law, Apace's total liability to you for any claim arising from these terms or your use of the service is limited to the greater of USD 50 or the amount you paid us in the 12 months before the claim arose (which, absent a paid subscription, will typically be USD 50). Apace is not liable for indirect, incidental, special, consequential, or punitive damages, or for lost profits or lost data, even if we were told those were possible.
Some places don't allow limits like these — where the law gives you rights we can't limit or exclude, those rights are unaffected by this section.
10. Indemnity
You agree to defend and indemnify Apace against claims, losses, and expenses (including reasonable legal fees) arising from content you upload without the rights to do so, or from your violation of these terms.
11. Governing law & disputes
These terms are governed by the laws of the State of New Jersey, USA, without regard to its conflict-of-laws rules. Any dispute that isn't resolved informally will be brought in the state or federal courts located in New Jersey, and you consent to that jurisdiction. If you live somewhere with consumer-protection laws that give you rights these terms can't override, this section doesn't take those rights away.
Before filing anything, please contact us at [email protected] — most issues can be sorted out directly.
12. Changes
We may update these terms from time to time. When we make a material change, we'll announce it in the app and update the date at the top of this page. Continuing to use Apace after a change takes effect means you accept the updated terms; if you don't agree with a change, stop using Apace and delete your account.
